What the Smart Booster is
The Smart Booster, model code MWS, is a factory-built refrigeration rack that runs on carbon dioxide instead of synthetic refrigerant. One machine serves your chilled cabinets and, on booster models, your freezer room as well.
It was designed around a constraint most retail sites share: there is no room for a conventional rack. At 1600 mm long and 750 mm wide, it fits into plant rooms, back-of-house corners and rooftop platforms that would otherwise rule out a centralised system.
Every unit leaves the factory piped, wired, pressure tested and pre-programmed. Your contractor connects power, pipework and the gas cooler, then commissions — rather than building a system on site.
CO₂ has a global warming potential of 1, against roughly 3,900 for R404A. It sits outside every refrigerant phase-down schedule, so the system you install today will not be the system you have to re-gas at a premium in 2032.
Why customers choose it
- It fitsThe smallest transcritical CO₂ rack in the SCM range, with the electrical panel available on the short side for tight installations.
- It arrives readyFactory tested with parameters already set. Commissioning is measured in days, not weeks.
- Proven componentsBITZER semi-hermetic piston compressors, CRII digital capacity modulation from 10 to 100%, maintenance-free oil separator, electronic oil level control on every compressor.
- Quiet enough for retailFrom 55 dB(A) at 10 m, with a low-noise enclosure available where neighbours or licensing demand it.
- Two temperatures, one rackOrder MT-only for chilled duty, or an MT/LT booster to run the freezer room from the same machine.
- Serviced locallySupplied, commissioned and maintained in Malaysia by RNA, with CO₂ training through the Beijer Ref Academy.

Reading a model number
Every Smart Booster model code describes its own build. Once you can read it, you can identify any unit at a glance.
MWS 2x096 MTDX + UMCE 010 HBT
- MWS
- Smart Booster range
- 2x096
- Two medium-temperature compressors, frame size 096
- MTDX
- Medium temperature, direct expansion
- UMCE 010 HBT
- One low-temperature compressor, size 010
Shortcut: no UMCE in the code means it is an MT-only unit. If UMCE is there, it is a full MT/LT booster.

If the Smart Booster is too small
The same platform scales up through the SCM Frigo booster family. As a rule of thumb, a store with fewer than about 30 display cases and one freezer room starts with the Smart Booster.

Common questions
What is a CO₂ transcritical booster rack?
It is a refrigeration system that uses carbon dioxide, R744, as the refrigerant and serves both medium-temperature chilled loads and low-temperature frozen loads from one machine. Transcritical refers to the cycle CO₂ runs in warm ambient conditions, where heat is rejected through a gas cooler rather than a conventional condenser.
Is CO₂ refrigeration suitable for Malaysia's climate?
Yes, and it is already installed here. Transcritical systems are engineered for high-ambient operation, with parallel compression, ejectors and adiabatic gas coolers used specifically to hold efficiency in warm climates. Ambient temperature affects a CO₂ system more strongly than an HFC system, so every selection should be checked against your actual design conditions rather than catalogue figures alone. That check is part of how we quote.
Why move from R404A or R134a to CO₂?
CO₂ has a global warming potential of 1, against roughly 3,900 for R404A. It sits outside every phase-down schedule, costs little, and is available everywhere. Choosing it removes the risk of your refrigerant becoming restricted or expensive part-way through the equipment's working life.
How much space does a Smart Booster need?
The unit itself is 1600 mm long, 750 mm wide and 1990 mm high. Allow additional clearance for service access, plus space for the gas cooler and interconnecting pipework.
Can one rack run a freezer room and a chiller together?
Yes. Choose any MT/LT booster model, identified by UMCE in the model code, and the single rack handles both duties.
Do you install and service these in Malaysia?
Yes. RNA Engineering & Trading supplies, commissions and services SCM Frigo equipment throughout Malaysia, backed by the Beijer Ref group's CO₂ expertise and Beijer Ref Academy training.
What is the lead time?
The Smart Booster is a standardised range, which shortens manufacturing lead time compared with a bespoke rack. Contact us for current availability against your project programme.
