R744 / CO2 central plant

BRGC CO2 Gas Coolers
& Remote Condensers

Eight models rejecting 69 kW to 345 kW at 36 °C ambient, built for transcritical CO2 supermarket and cold storage plant in Malaysia’s climate. Supplied and supported nationwide by RNA Engineering & Trading, a Beijer Ref company.

  • 130 bar design pressure
  • 910 mm EC axial fans
  • Horizontal or vertical discharge
  • Al/Mg fin as standard
BRGC three-fan CO2 remote gas cooler with 910 mm EC axial fans and painted steel casing

Built to reject CO2 heat in a tropical climate

The BRGC range is a remote gas cooler and condenser for R744 commercial central plant — supermarkets, cold rooms, distribution centres and air conditioning installations where low noise and low running cost matter.

In transcritical operation the CO2 leaves the compressor above its critical point and rejects heat without condensing, so the coil works as a gas cooler. When ambient falls and the plant drops below the critical point, the same unit works as a condenser. Both duties are published below so you can check the machine across the year rather than at one design point.

The coil surface to fan ratio is optimised so air distributes evenly at a reduced pressure drop across a wide fan speed range. That keeps electricity consumption down at part load, which is where a gas cooler spends most of its operating hours.

Features

  • 130 bar design pressure for transcritical CO2 duty
  • Copper connections and headers in CuFe2P
  • Fan motors factory pre-wired back to a junction box, so site wiring is one termination
  • Floating coil technology to absorb thermal movement
  • Aluminium/magnesium fin as standard; heavy duty coil coating available
  • Painted steel casing and end plates for a longer service life outdoors
  • Vertical or horizontal air discharge on every model

Options

  • Heavy duty electrocoat coil protection
  • Nano coated fin, rated 10,000 hours
  • Adiabatic sprays (parts only)
  • Overspray shield for adiabatic spray applications

BRGC model range

All eight models share the same 1382 mm deep casing and 910 mm EC fan platform. Length grows with fan count; capacity grows with coil rows.

BRGC nomenclature
Position Example Meaning
BRGC BRGC Manufacturer — Beijer Ref Wuxi
Digit 1 1 Number of coils
Digit 2 3 Number of fans (1 to 4)
Digit 3 3 Number of rows (3 or 5)
Letter C Coil block variant / module, size C = 1750 mm
Letter R Fin type: R = Al/Mg raw, N = Al/Mg nano coated (10,000 hrs)
Suffix EC Electronically commutated fans

Airflow configuration is confirmed at time of order. Units ship as horizontal airflow unless vertical is specified.

Heat rejection capacity

Capacities are published at three fan speeds. Running a larger model at 850 or 680 rpm is often the cheaper long-term choice: fan power and sound both fall sharply while capacity holds up.

LwA is sound power; LpA(3) is sound pressure at the published rating location. Dropping from 980 rpm to 680 rpm removes roughly 9 dB(A) — a useful lever for sites with a night-time noise limit. Full octave band spectra from 100 Hz to 8 kHz are available on request.

Where the BRGC is used

  • Supermarket and hypermarket CO2 booster racks
  • Cold storage and distribution centres
  • Food processing plant with central CO2 refrigeration
  • Convenience retail and quick-service restaurant chains standardising on R744
  • Commercial air conditioning central plant requiring low noise operation

Malaysia’s HFC phase-down under the Kigali Amendment is pushing new central plant towards natural refrigerants. CO2 has a GWP of 1, is not subject to quota, and keeps a site clear of future refrigerant supply risk. The gas cooler is the part of that system most exposed to local ambient, which is why the 36 °C selection data matters more here than the European rating.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a CO2 gas cooler and a condenser?

In transcritical operation the CO2 is above its critical point when it leaves the compressor, so it cools without changing phase — that heat exchanger is a gas cooler. Below the critical point the CO2 condenses normally and the same coil acts as a condenser. The BRGC is rated for both duties, which is why two sets of capacity tables are published.

Which BRGC model should I select for a Malaysian site?

Start from the 36 °C transcritical table, since it sits close to local design ambient. Match your rack heat rejection to a model at the fan speed you plan to run. If the site has a noise limit or you want to cut fan energy, step up one model and run it at 850 or 680 rpm rather than running a smaller unit flat out.

What is the design pressure?

130 bar, with copper connections and headers in CuFe2P, suited to transcritical CO2 central plant.

Can it be supplied for vertical air discharge?

Yes, on all eight models. Airflow configuration is confirmed at time of order; units ship as horizontal airflow unless vertical is specified.

Is a corrosion protected coil available?

Aluminium/magnesium fin is standard. Nano coated fin rated to 10,000 hours and heavy duty electrocoat are available for coastal and chemically aggressive sites. Adiabatic spray parts and an overspray shield can also be supplied.

How is the unit wired on site?

All fan motors are factory pre-wired back to a junction box, so the site electrical contractor terminates once at the unit rather than wiring each fan individually.
